Ultracycling, a demanding discipline that pushes the limits of traditional cycling, is attracting more and more enthusiasts eager for challenge and adventure.

If you're thinking of taking up ultracycling, it's essential to prepare properly and follow a few key tips to maximize your chances of success.

In this article, we present 10 tips to help you get started in the exciting world of ultracycling.

1. Start with reasonable distances

Before embarking on ultracycling, get used to cycling over shorter distances. Start with outings of around 50 to 100 km and gradually increase your distances. This will enable you to develop your endurance while learning to cope with the physical demands of prolonged effort.

2. Train regularly

Ultracycling requires rigorous physical preparation and strong mental stamina. Draw up a weekly program including long rides, interval sessions and climbs, complemented by muscle strengthening to build power and stamina.

3. Equip yourself properly

Invest in a bike that's suitable for ultracycling, comfortable and efficient over long distances. Make sure it fits you perfectly (saddle, handlebars, etc.) and opt for high-quality technical clothing designed for comfort and moisture management. Don't forget the essential accessories: panniers, water bottles and sturdy helmets.

4. Feed yourself properly

Good nutrition is essential to support your performance. Focus on complex carbohydrates (pasta, rice, potatoes) for sustained energy, complemented by proteins for muscle recovery and healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil) for cardiovascular health. Also learn to refuel along the way with appropriate energy foods, and hydrate regularly before, during and after your outings.

5. Plan your routes and breaks

Before each ride, study your route to identify refreshment points, rest areas and any difficult sections. Plan to stop every 2 to 3 hours to stretch, feed and recuperate, to maintain your performance over time.

6. Prepare yourself mentally

Ultracycling is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Anticipate moments of doubt and fatigue by using relaxation and visualization techniques. Imagine yourself succeeding, develop strategies to manage pain and fatigue, and focus on your goals to stay motivated throughout the event.

7. Test your equipment before the race

Before a competition or ultracycling challenge, make sure your equipment is in perfect condition. Make training rides over distances close to those of the event to check that your bike, tires, brakes and accessories are in good working order, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure comfort and safety.

8. Join a community of ultracyclists

Joining a group of ultracyclists allows you to benefit from advice, share routes and training tips, and take part in group outings. Mutual help and support are invaluable assets for making progress and staying motivated.

9. Take care of your recovery

Recovery is crucial to preventing injury and improving performance. Give yourself sufficient rest after intense effort, practice targeted stretching, and use techniques such as massage or cold baths to facilitate muscle recovery.

10. Set realistic goals

Set progressive, achievable goals, starting with short-distance races and then increasing the difficulty. Celebrate your progress and learn from your failures, while enjoying the adventure and pleasure of cycling.

Now you're ready to launch yourself into the demanding world of ultracycling. By following these ten tips, you'll effectively prepare your body and mind to push back your limits and enjoy every moment of this extraordinary adventure.
